The Czech Republic assigns a unique numerical identifier, known as the personal number, to its citizens and residents. This number is governed by the law č. 133/2000 Sb. The personal number reveals the person's date of birth and gender. Slovakia also employs a similar numerical identifier with the same format. The personal number comprises either 9 or 10 digits.

For instance, the number 520825/5129 corresponds to a birthdate of August 25, 1952. The 10-digit Czech personal number, which has been in use since 1954, is divisible by eleven without a remainder to facilitate the recognition of typos or other errors. The last digit of the 10-digit personal number serves as a check digit, which is the remainder after dividing the first nine digits of the 11-digit personal number by eleven. The divisibility by eleven can be easily verified by checking the difference between the sum of the digits in even and odd positions and its divisibility by eleven. For instance, for the number 736028/5163, the sum of the digits in odd positions (7 + 6 + 2 + 5 + 6 = 26) minus the sum of digits in even positions (3 + 0 + 8 + 1 + 3 = 15) equals 11, which is divisible by eleven. Therefore, the entire personal number is divisible by eleven and is formally valid.
